SADAQATUN JARIYYAH (REVOLVING CHARITY): THE ESSENCE OF HUMAN LIFE

 Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim

Life in human circle remains meaningless if social benefits and and other humanly possible goodness are denied. Contrarily, life becomes wholesomely bearable if spirit of sharing is allowed to take a center stage of every endeavour. By extension, however, charity appears a golden catalyst for endured blessing and possible attracting varieties of favour in return, a substantial part of which is security of the benefactor. Glory be to Almighty Allah (SubhanaHu Wa Ta'ala (SWT)) in His infinite mercy. May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon the noble Messenger Muhammad (SallaLlahu Alayhi Wasallam (SAW)) and all   his ardent followers till the Day of Resurrection.

The pendulum of this edition swings to the essence of revolving charity and the comparative shared benefits to both benefactor and beneficiary. The goal of man's creation codified in Qur'an 55:56 is further explained in Qur'an 2:282 with exhortation on Taqwa as the motive. Allah (SWT) says: 'And fear the Day when you shall be brought back to Allah. Then shall every soul be paid what it earned, and none shall be dealt with unjustly.'

The philosophy of the above Qur'an Ayah is usually presented by the noble Messenger when it was reported that Ibn Umar (Radiya Llahu Anhu (R. A)) recalled that the holy Messenger held my shoulders and said: 'live in the world like a stranger or in transit, he was also saying if you witness afternoon never should you expect morning and vice versa. So use part of your strong health for your illness and from your entire life for your death.'

Life is all about hurdles and hussle in spite of which man must find alliance with the Creator Allah. Neither wealth nor children should constitute encumbrance in the way to harmony with Allah. Not only that, the two cardinal horizons of worship appears paramount and except he takes proper care of them, Allah displeasure might be incurred. Both vertical horizon connecting man with the Divine Allah is of paramount importance while the horizontal conundrum is equally not unimportant as it spells harmony between man and other creatures, non-human inclusive.

More explicitly, Allah gives four main philosophical spheres of   earthly goodness in 2 by 2 ways of positive and negative. He enjoin: 'But seek , with the (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on you, the home of the hereafter, nor forget your portion in this world: but do you good, as Allah has been good to you, and seek not (occasions for) mischief in the land: for Allah loves not those who do mischief.' These four principles are self-explanatory regarding the dos and don'ts to ensure obedience towards Allah.

Inter alia, a concise description of the aftermath of these celebrated exhortations leads a Muslim to desirable and lovely outcome. To this end, the noble Messenger (SAW) submitted that: 'Whenever a man dies, nothing benefits him any longer except the following three namely; revolving charity (Sadaqatun Jariyyah), benefitting knowledge ('Ilmun yuntafa'un bihi), and genuine surviving child (Waladun Salih) who offers post-mortem prayer.' The contention here remains in the manner of training the child received from parents for the realities of today's life tend to be outrageous in terms of submissiveness to training.

The parents in turn must leave no stone unturned in terms of the respective training in all ramifications. From the Western (modern education to make him productive), Spiritual training to enable him discharge deserving duties to parents and others in the society, and it can as well involve skill acquisition necessary for a good living and informal and ethical training (Adab) useful for faring well among the categories of people. Yet, parents must not be too busy or engrossed with all these at the expense of rightful duties towards Allah. Doing otherwise (abdicating child's training and avoiding duties to Allah) amounts to next to disbelief as far as Islam is concerned.

To this end, Allah (SWT) laid strong emphasis on striving to train and mentor a child across board. In Suratul Munafiqun (Qur'an 63:9-11) Allah enunciates: 'O you who believe! let not your riches or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah, if you act thus, surely they are the losers. And spend something (in charity) out of substance which We have bestowed on you, before death should come to any of you and he should say, 'O my Lord! why did you not give me respite for a little while? I should then have given (largely) in charity, and I should have one of the doers of good'. But to no soul will Allah grant respite when the time appointed (for it) has come; and Allah is well acquainted with (all) that you do'.

In essence, a line of poetry sums up the narratives. It says: 'ولا شيءا يدوم فكن حديثا # جميل الذكر فالدنيا حديث meaning: 'Nothing endures then lay  precedence; of good memoir for life is but a memory.' Summarily, a Muslim should address himself to 1. Immortalizing his name by himself and not waiting untill death. 2. Leaving level-playing ground before death. 3. Good name is admired than jewellery. 4. Train children who take over your estates after you. 5.  Take care of relatives, and 6.Take care of yourself. These are the prime components of Sadaqatun jariyyah expected of a Muslim.
